Canonical has announced Ubuntu 16.04 (aka Xenial Xerus) and the ISOs of the Ubuntu family are available for download. Ubuntu 16.04 (with Unity desktop) comes with tonnes of goodies and fresh software for end users as well as server maintainers. Let’s take a quick look.
- Systemd as init system
- Unified apt
- LXD container hypervisor
- GNOME Software
- Linux kernel 4.4
- Gnome 3.18
- Unity 7.4
- Python 3.5
- Go 1.6
A word of caution for AMD Radeon graphics card users: the fglrx driver is deprecated and open source radeon and amdgpu do not deliver comparable performance.
Ubuntu 16.04 is an LTS release and will be supported for 5 years. Grab your copy now or upgrade (from 14.04 or 15.10) using the following commands as root:
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get upgrade $ sudo update-manager -d
Press Enter, type in your password and hit the Upgrade button to start the upgrade.
Or you can order the bootable Ubuntu 16.04 USB stick from Canonical.
System requirements remain decent:
- 2 GHz dual core processor or better
- 2 GB system memory
- 25 GB of free hard drive space
